President Obama has been taking a lot of heat in recent weeks. Actually, he's been taking heat ever since he was elected, but the recent heat is of a different form. Now, in addition to the ever-present partisan Republican protests, he is also receiving sharp criticism from his own party.
Health reform in the United States just doesn't seem like it is possible anymore. In his campaign, Obama made it seem easy, but now that we're actually crossing the dessert, Moses doesn't exactly seem like the ideal leader.
But in all fairness, let's take a look at what else the man has to go against. So besides Republicans that support the drug and insurance companies that continue to make profit at the expense of the health of the American people, besides the politicians that have been bought out by big insurance and drug companies (ie Joe Lieberman), and besides the Democrats that won't support a bill without a public option, Obama also has to deal with rogue nations developing nuclear arsenals (N. Korea, and Iran), blood-feuding nations about ready to start WWIII (Israel, Lebanon, and Hizballah), an economy that is picking itself up by its boot-straps, and...an increasingly dissatisfied American public?
Excuse me I have to ask...why? Perhaps it would be best if we followed the actions of our former administration and buried our heads in the sand. That way, if we can't see the problems of this world, maybe they won't affect us. Maybe we should just focus our efforts on building super-cool weapons, so that if any problems -foreign or domestic - come up, we can just shoot them down. Maybe we can all just judge Tiger Woods, nag on the commercialization of Christmas, or watch the latest episode of Desperate Housewives to forget all of our own troubles.
I don't approve of all the actions that this administration is making, but I am at least glad that it is taking an active role in trying to sort out important issues.
